American science education at its best.

What will become of the world if this is what American Education gives us?

Things Canada should avoid

Firedoglake has a post up on mandatory sentencing and similar ideas we should avoid.   Read it.

Wha…?

From Firedoglake

Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota) claims that

“[Pelosi] is committed to her global warming fanaticism to the point where she has said that she’s just trying to save the planet. We all know that someone did that over 2,000 years ago, they saved the planet — we didn’t need Nancy Pelosi to do that”

Who saved the planet 2000 years ago?  Cosidering the history of the last 2000 years, why did this person do such a crappy job of it?

Why is another provinces’ MP mailing me

Posted in Canadian politics with tags , , on August 17, 2008 by solenadon

In mid July I recieved a Frank mailing from Brian Fitzpatrick.  And this past week I recieved one from David Anderson

Which is strange because my MP is Rod Bruinooge

I wondered, why are these Saskatchewan MP’s sending me frank mailings…mailing that look quite a bit like election propaganda.

Turns out I’m not alone.  Other Canadian’s are recieving these.

I wondered why MP’s other than my own were sending out these mailings.  These mailings seem to be geared to push fear buttons, especially on crime and drugs.  No actual information is given, just an attempt to push buttons.

This is somethign that offends me.  These MP’s do not represent me.  Why are they sending me mail?  Why are they wasting Canadian taxpayer money to push a partisan position?

It seems that Stephen Harper is taking a page from the Republican play book…push fear of crime despite the fact that crime in Canada has been decreasing…which is ironic considering their in-and-out scheme.

Westboro cultists bullies are dealt with

Posted in Venomous mammals with tags , , on August 10, 2008 by solenadon

The Westboro Baptist Church cultists showed their true colours and their true faces today.

Yellow Cowards.

These oh so brave cultists threatened to picket Tim McLean’s funeral on Saturday. This young man was the victim of a brual and senseless murder last week. These cultists

wanted to let the world know their believe their petty deity let this happens because it is mad at Canada because of our “filthy ways”.

One contingent was stopped at the border. Another got through.

But when a counter protest was planned, these “brave” people never showed up. Ms. Phelps-Roper claimed that (From Winnipeg Freee press http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/story/4210468p-4802837c.html)

“A couple hundred people, are you kidding me? That’s child play, usually we see 1,000 people out there,” she said. “God can do things that you wouldn’t imagine, the last thing I am worried about are some brutes Canada. We will know what to do when the hour comes.”

250 people turned up outside the funeral to counter-protest these cultists. Apparently their deity had better things to do on Saturday.

Also, her claim that “it appears there is no religious freedom in Canada.” is BS. We have plenty Freedom of religion here. But the citizens of Winnipeg decided that a families’ right to mourn their son was more important that a cult’s self-rightousness. The WBC’s right to picket does not mean they can picket unopposed, as seems to be Ms. Phelps-Ropers mis-apprehension.

Westboro Chruch at it again

Posted in Venomous mammals with tags , , on August 7, 2008 by solenadon

Westboro Church, famous for proclaiming “God hates fags” at funerals is coming to Winnipeg on Saturday to repeat their schtick at the funaeral of Tim McLean.

Said a spokesperson of these “people”:

“God hates you, and it’s because of your rebellion against his word that this child is dead.”

7 membes of this Church will be in Winnipeg on Saturday.

Happenings on a Greyhound

Posted in Venomous mammals on August 1, 2008 by solenadon

Today’s events on a Eastbound Greyhound here in Manitoba are horrific.  I really don’t need to say much more that that about them.

What I do find interesting are the reactions.  While reading the Cnn web site I clicked on the link blogs mentioning the story and came across on labelled “Barking moonbat early warning system”.

This blog was mostly cuts-and-pastes from the wires describing the attack.  Not much there.  But then, at the end, he has a short paragraph ending with “you know what my question is, and you have already reached the same conclusion I have.  Let’s see if we’re wrong for once.

Well, what’s his question?  From what I see, I’ll make a few inferences.  Just the name of the blog tells me this is a wingnut…one of those who bray loudly about how Liberals are ruining Western Civilization, but are strangly quiet when a Conservative shoots up a church.

As well, On of his commenter states “It would really surprise me if the suspect were not a Muslim. “  It seems to me that this happened before…In Oklahoma city.  When the Murrah Building was destroyed the presumed suspect was supposedly middle eastern.  It seems Wingnuts are happy to heap blame on whoever they are afraid of.

So, I imagine the question this nutter asked was “is this was a mooslim performing a jihadi attack on some innocent westerner?”

More rational people people will mourn the loss of an innocent life and wonder how we can avoid it in the future..without resorting to wingnutter paranoia.

Christian cutting-and-pasting

Ed Brayton of the Dispatches from the Culture Wars blog picked up an interesting happening from the American Family Association web site.  Apparently the AFA has a macro that looks for the word “gay” in news articles and replaces it with the word “homosexual”.  However, in this case it was a sports report about a sprinter named Tyson Gay.

One can imagine what the report looked like after the macro was done.

Actually, one will have to imagine, as the AFA has fixed up said article, removing their “enhancements“.  To have a sense of what it was, go here.  Or just click here.

IDiots – only 30 years late

Posted in Creationism with tags , on July 5, 2008 by solenadon

It appears that Denise O’Leary and the IDiots at the Disco institute have finally discovered Fred Hoyle (an astronomer, not a biologist) and panspermia…thirty years after Evolution from Space was published.

This is fast for the Disco ‘tute.

What does Denise say…

Hoyle was ignored because most people preferred to believe in the Shazzam! origin of life in a warm little test tube somewhere. Most people believe in miracles.
No Denise…that’s not why he was ignored.  The problem with his idea is that it merely pushed the origin of life somewhere else.  It didn’t really add anything because it pushed the origin of life out into space.
And if this theory was accepted , Denise and the IDiots would still disparage it because it would still require a “Shazzam! origin of life in a warm little test tube somewhere.”
I suppose it would help at this point that Hoyle’s co-author really disliked creationism (to which I include ID).  Chandra Wickramasinghe was a witness on the creationist side.  However, this didn’t stop him from stating that a person would have to be crazy to believe the universe was only around 10,000 years old, and that creationism was claptrap.
Why do O’Leary and the Disco ‘tute claim that these people claim that “In other words, they require intelligent design”?  Well, not to put a too fine a point on it, their grasping at straws.  Panspermia still would require abiogenesis, but it does not require a so-called “Intelligent designer”.  Panspermia, especially Hoylian Panspermia, is based on his flawed understanding of the probabilities involved.  See here for a brief explanation.
Of course this is all a one way street.  Denise’s cohort, Dave Scot, has a problem when people ask who designed the “Intelligent Designer”.  He claims these questions are “trite, easily addressed, and if you read the moderation rules you’ll find that comments using this and other trite arguments are deleted“.  If these questions are easily answered, where are the answers, beyond the ID dodge of “they’re trite”?  It would appear that Scotty and the IDiots know that they cannot answer this, so they prefer to hide their heads in the sand.
